Rock like an ancient Egyptian: Fine tuning the path to employment
My person who helps me do life once asked me what my dream job is. Summer camp director, all year. Forever.
Summer camp... outdoor school... indoor school...? OK, masters program go!
Wait, let's get a job at a school and double check that you still like kids that aren't your own. Hey, remember that time you were teaching CPR and First Aid through the Red Cross and people kept telling you to be a teacher? Shouldn't have let my instructor certification expire.
Have you guys ever worked in SPED?! This is wild and amazing, but I cry too much, ew. Some days I get punched in the face, some days we are singing "We're working hard, 'cuz we are students" to the tune of Sabrina Carpenter's Espresso.
Speaking of switch it up like Nintendo, is this a game of luck or strategy? Job wanted.
I have one semester to wow my admin. and colleagues which breaks down to two quarters, which means two game based learning opportunities.
Sixth grade, ancient civilizations, lean in on those simulations. Battle simulation! Totally going to wear my "Murder Pinata; Trojan Horse" T-shirt.
Day in the life of (insert nonspecific historical type person here). One time my mom dressed up as Jonah from Jonah and the whale at VBS, she made chocolate pudding with crunched up Oreos and gummy worms as a simulation of him living off of mud and actual worms.... delicious, entertaining, not sure it captured the gravity of the moment.
Birthday side quest wheel. A novel routine! I was so worried that my routines wouldn't have any spontaneity. I am so gamifying the class around students' birthdays.
Side quests 5-10 minutes in length
1. Dance of the Gods - we play a quick music track, think Walk like an Egyptian (instrumental) while we boogie a lil' and birthday kid gets to share jolly ranchers with class (which is also a good grounding/resourcing technique)
2. Built Like a Babylonian - use random classroom materials to build a "ziggurat"
3. Oracle Says - like Simon says but fun-er, ancient style verbiage "The gods decree..."
4. Socratic Circle Flash - What if Julius Caesar had a TikTok? Popcorn responses
5. Fraudulent Fables - random draw 2 characters from our curriculum and one random current object, create a story and surmise the outcome.
Sorry guys, this is what happens when I talk to myself for hours, I say things you don't understand.
I'm typing late, 'cuz I'm in grad school....(Espresso. SING IT)

Gah, this was so fun to read, it nearly curled my toes, lol! I love your ideas and wish I could be in your class. What fun! I once had elementary age Sunday School children build the walls of Jericho with boxes, then march around the "city" 13 times, blow a trumpet, and knock the walls down. They never forgot the details of that story!!
ReplyDeleteI am adding that to the wheel Robin!
